Minister of justice logoThe Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) and the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) will work closer together to deliver world class criminal research, intelligence and operational outcomes.

From 13th July 2015, ACC CEO Chris Dawson is the newly appointed Interim Director of the AIC.

The Australian Government is considering whether the AIC should be placed within the ACC, but a final decision has not been made.

In the interim, the ACC and AIC will continue to exist and operate as separate entities, while working together on expanding existing relationships.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of the AIC during the last six years under former Director Dr Adam Tomison.

During Dr Tomison’s tenure the AIC published 230 peer reviewed applied research papers and reports on crime and justice isues and more than 460 publications of all types.

Also, many thousands of Australian criminal justice workers, police and researchers benefited from the AIC conferencing program allowing for sharing of ideas, and professional development to strengthen areas in this sector.

Dr Tomison embraced social media to communicate the valuable research findings of the AIC and the agency now has 20,000 people following its activities.

All directors have brought their particular expertise to the role and Dr Tomison’s focus on child protection and abuse, and domestic violence research will have a long lasting effect on the way Australia’s policies are shaped.

I would like to thank Dr Tomison for his dedicated service.
